27. Working in International Development Across Africa with Morgan Limo


 

Episode 27:


Morgan Limo is a Foreign Service Program Officer assigned to USAID/Uganda. She is responsible for budgeting, monitoring, and evaluating of U.S. foreign assistance programs valued at over $450M and spanning all sectors including health, democracy and governance, education, and economic growth. She is passionate about measuring the effectiveness of foreign assistance and reducing systemic barriers to inclusive and sustainable development. Morgan previously served as the Deputy Program Officer at USAID/Guinea & Sierra Leone, where she supported a robust Ebola recovery portfolio across both countries, based in Conakry, Guinea. She has completed both short and long-term assignments abroad including in Guinea, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Morgan has also worked in other capacities at USAID including as a Program Manager for President Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), and as a Program Advisor with the Power and Trade Africa Initiatives. She directly supported the development of the USAID Bureau for Africa’s Private Capital Group for Africa (now the Office of Private Capital and Microenterprise); she also supported the Africa and Food Security Congressional Liaisons as a consultant in the Bureau for Legislative and Public Affairs. Before joining USAID, she worked briefly in the personal office of U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), as well as with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Organization Affairs. Morgan has published several articles on topics including diversity and inclusion in Foreign Affairs, youth, trade and investment, and entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa, and has been featured in notable publications such as the American Foreign Service Journal, Ventures Africa Magazine, and the Diplomatic Courier. Morgan holds both a Bachelor's and Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. She is a 2015 Alumni of the International Career Advancement Program (ICAP) for mid-career international affairs professionals, and the Penn Kemble Fellowship at the National Endowment for Democracy. She currently serves as a board member for the Department of Political Science at UIUC, and as Outcomes Director/board member at Cross World Africa, and non-for-profit supporting livelihoods in Kenya.
